LG1 MK III The Nexter LG1 Mk III is the latest development of the French Nexter Group, which was unveiled in 2018. This 105 mm modern towed howitzer is designed as a lightweight and highly mobile artillery support piece designated for air assault, air-mobile or rapid deployment forces, where minimum weight and maximum effectiveness are crucial. It can be deployed in remote and mountainous areas as well as urban zones. LG1 features L30 barrel (30-calibre long barrel) with an effective double-baffle muzzle brake and a Toplite gun ballistic computer fitted with an inertial (internal?) 3D aiming and posi- tioning system as well as with a muzzle velocity radar. It can also be connected to the EADS STREAM C31 system. The howitzer is operated by a 5-men crew. The lightweight howitzer (only 1,550 kilograms) can be towed by 4x4 vehicles such as HMMWV, pick-up trucks or slung un- der medium helicopters (UH-1, UH-60, NH-90, Caracal, etc.). The howitzer is air-transportable (up to four units on board of a C-130 Hercules cargo plane) and can be airdropped on a pallet (maximum ceiling for drop is 300 meters). The effective range of LG1 is around 17,000 m with Nexter Munitions LP G3 rounds (available in different variants, such as standard and base bleed) or up to 11,000 m with standard US M1 rounds. Wide array of ammunition can be used due to NATO-standard chamber. Max- imum rate of fire is up to twelve rounds per minute. Maximum range for direct fire is 2,000 m. LG1 is easy in use and thanks to simplified and streamlined design, it does not require extensive maintenance and support. First variant of the LG1, the Mk I was developed in 1987. The 105 mm LG1 is already in service in Belgium, Canada, Colum- bia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. NEXTER M621 Another product of Nexter Systems offered by Works 11 is the 20 mm M621 automatic cannon. Blow-back operated M621 is well- known for its high accuracy, light weight and superior flexibility and operational effectiveness. The effective range of M621 is 2,000 m and its rate of fire is around 750-800 rounds per minute. The effective range and terminal effect of the M621 is signifi- cantly higher than that of a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun while retaining similar dimensions, mass and recoil forces. It is now available in mul- tiple variants, including turreted THL20 for helicopters, NC 621 pod variant for helicopters a n d www.fragoutmag.com
