Both SCAR and MSBS are semi-automatic (or select-fire), gas operated, short stroke piston rifles with rotating bolts as most of the modern rifles. Absolutely nothing ground-breaking here. The main differences are in de- tails, including gas blocks and bolt carrier groups. SCAR fea- tures two-position gas block with lock which prevents accidental removal. In MSBS, the gas block has two working position and one position for removal or re- placement. There is only a slight resistance between working and removal position, so it might be accidentally release. This is most criticized part of the weapon. SCAR has foldable front sight attached permanent- ly attached to the gas block. The MSBS has iron sights attached to the MIL-STD-1913 rail. Piston in SCAR is single element, the MSBS has separated piston and long piston rod with spring. The long piston rod in SCAR was replaced with extended part of bolt carrier, protruding from up- per receiver. MSBS has short and compact bolt carrier which is located in the upper receiver. SCAR charging handle is at- tached to this part of bolt carrier and it is reciprocating, it moves back and forward during shoot- ing. Its installation is toolless and might be easily located to either right or left side of the weapon. MSBS features non-reciprocat- ing ambidextrous charging han- dle which is fixed to the upper receiver.
