In some armed forces, to include Polish, very often soldiers during some field exercises are spotted with commercial-grade PMR radios. Well, in peacetime conditions and in non-combat related roles there is nothing wrong about them, but if infantry units are using the basic commercial radios as their primary tactical communications, it means that someone has to rethink this. Soldiers must be aware that simple radios do not provide safe communications as they are easy to locate and to intercept as they lack any safety features like encryption. And again, they work like a magnet for enemy's artillery and aircraft. Best replacement for such devices would be communication based on the mili- tary-grade communications systems for tactical level, such as R305010 developed by Polish RADMOR. These are safe, reliable and hard to locate due the unique features that increase the safety of users. RADMOR S.A., a part of WB Group, the leading Polish independent defense industry holding, is a long-standing manufacturer of radiocommunication equipment for mil- itary forces and complex secured communications solutions. They offer a wide range of means of communication of all kinds, such as vehicular, manpacked or handheld. All the devices are fully compatible and are designed to work as a system The compact R35010 personal role radios are one of smallest devices manufactured by the company. The R35010 PRR-class radio is a compact handheld device for use one the basic com- mand level, as infantry squad radio or as a part of a small network. The radio operates in the unlicensed band from 2405 to 2480 MHz using Direct Sequence Spread Spec- trum (DSSS) with impulse transmission and reception of digital voice and data for in- creased safety of transmission. The DSSS allows to minimize the chances for detecting the transmission source. The R35010 has four work modes: Ä simplex digital voice communication with manual activation. Ä simplex digital voice communication with automatic retransmission. Ä duplex digital voice communication (aka conference mode) with manual or voice activation. The simultaneous data transmission (up to 19.2 kbps) is available. All radios from the same network can receive conference calls simultaneously but the simultaneous transmission is available for up to 4 radios. Ä data transmission mode up to 125 kbps. To withstand the extreme weather and field conditions, the radio has MIL-STD-810G and MIL-STD-810F compliant body which can be made from lightweight aircraft-grade aluminium or magnesium alloy, depending on the version and customer requirements. The R35010 is IP67 rated, so it is completely sealed against water and dust. As already mentioned, the R35010 radio is really compact (115/69/33 mm, 180 mm with antenna attached) and lightweight (275 grams with magnesium body and 345 grams with aluminium body). Just to give an idea, the rugged smartphones are usually over 200 grams. The radio is powered with two AA batteries or rechargables which enable for up to 17 hours of constant operation. On the front panel there is a PTT button with an extra rim around to prevent accidental activation. Just below the button, there is a speaker and microphone which are used when the radio is acting as a handheld device. The transmission might be activated with a wireless PTT button available in two versions: WPTT and DWPTT (Dual). The wireless PTT could be up to 2 meters from the radio. www.fragoutmag.com www.fragoutmag.com
