BIVY BAG OR BIVY SHELTERS? Usually, the bivy bag term was used for all the waterproof breathable membrane outer covers for the sleeping bags but someone came up with an idea of the bivy bag combined with a single or two poles located near the head to create some additional space in the form of a dome. Usually, both "standard" covers and those "tent-like" covers are called bivy bags, but some try to separate the supports and describe them as 'bivy shelters'. Since the Carinthia describes their Observer Plus as "the perfect sniper bivy bag with self-standing double pole support" we will stick to the bivy bag term. Basically it is a combo of a 1-man tent and outer cover for sleeping bag. These bags were built with military users in mind and some of the solutions implemented are totally different than the ones you could expect in the outdoor product. The main fabric is 3-layer W.L. Gore GORE-TEX® Gas Permeable Technology laminate that provides ultimate protection against wind and rain without sacrificing the air permeability. All the seams are taped with GORE-SEAM for increased resistance. The use of GORE-TEX® Gas Permeable Technology was a solution to the common problem of single- walled tents, the air permeability and moisture. In the double- walled tents, the outer layer provides some insulation and the condensation usually does not exist, especially when vents are opened. Unfortunately, open vents will allow the cold air to enter the tent. It is always a balance between "dry" and "muggy". The smaller the space inside the tent, the problem is rising.
