Considering the aforesaid matters, building entirely new missile vessels would be a better option here. Valuable elements of the equipment from Orkans could be transferred to the new war- ships, including the RBS 15 Mk 3 anti-ship missiles, Sea Giraffe and Sting-EO radars, and the Tacticos suite. They would be com- plemented by new gun systems and modern equipment, already planned to be procured for the sake of the Orkans upgrade. This is a common practice among numerous navies. It would make it possible to procure entirely new vessels that, thanks to the big- ger hull, could also carry very effective VSHORAD/CIWS assets, such as the RAM missile system, or the Phalanx solution. The Technical Modernization Plan covering the period between 2021 and 2035, published by the MoD on October 10th, 2019 2020. Most probably, because of the high cost that it would entail. The decision is good and bad at the same time. The potential modernization would result in the replacement of the obsolete propulsion with a modern, western solution. Integration of a new gun that could fire a broad array of modern rounds, including ABM rounds, would relevantly improve the defense capabilities, both when it comes to acting against small and medium surface threats, as well as in the self-defense department when it comes to air defense. At the moment the vessels are defenseless within that scope. However, there were much more disadvantages here. First stemmed from the comparison of the breadth of the up- grade (a necessity, if one wanted to replace the entire propulsion system) with the age and the technical condition of the vessels. The expansive and expensive upgrade of 3-decades-old ships was questionable. After the completion of works, the Navy would receive vessels that are 32-33 years old. www.fragoutmag.com
