The fourth generation of the Merkava MBT was designed in parallel with the
commissioning of the Mk 3 BAZ. The prototypes were going through the final stage
of the test program starting from 2001. The manufacturing of the new MBT was
launched in 2004. Undoubtedly it can be said that Merkava Mk 4 has
been the vehicle for the Israeli industry to catch up with nations such as
the United States, Germany, France, or Russia. In some areas, Israel
has even become a global leader.
