withdraw one of the A17s (that already has been a reserve asset for quite some time, according to rumors coming from Sweden). The second A17 would be decommissioned in parallel with the commissioning of the first A26 new generation submarine. The situation has gained the attention of the Polish MoD, seeking a way to rapidly procure further gap-filler submarines that could reinforce the Polish submarine component. The Swedish pro- posal involved the sale of two second-hand A17 submarines. For the Swedes, the memorandum signed would be beneficial beyond the financial aspect (as Poland would pay for vessels that are bound to be decommissioned anyway). The potential sales would translate into a major financial boost for SAAB - the assigned upgrade contractor. Even though the scope of the upgrade remains confidential, it was to be broad. Apart from the integration of communication systems and cryptog- raphy solutions that would be compliant with NATO standards, the modernization was also to cover new torpedoes and mines, new combat systems, new sensors, or replacement of the Stir- ling-engine AIP system. The Swedish parliament approved the sale of two A17 for Poland in April 2020. The decision was supposed to lead the parties straight to the deal. Contrary to the expectations, no break- through within that scope happened. News emerged, suggest- ing that any chance to finalize the plan would be questionable at best. NAVY
