Shortly after military adoption, in 2018, 5.56 MSBS/GROT rifle was commercially released as a semi-automatic GROT S16 FB-M1 with 16" barrel, short handguard and standard side-folded stock - the al- most identical configuration as the stan- dard issue rifle. But till recently it was "modular" only by the name because up- grades were not available. First add-ons, such as extended length handguard, 10.5" barrel assembly, AR- style stock adapter, new pistol grip, verti- cal front grip and rail covers were finally released in early 2021. Next step was introduction of kit with two barrels (ac- cording to Polish gun laws, barrels are important parts of firearms and has to be serialized and each serial number is a "position" in gun license which limits the number of possessed firearms) with the same S/N. Still, the shooter's communi- ty was craving for more. Side note - the Fabryka Broni is a state-owned company and commercial sales are just a friction of their business and the commercial release of GROT and 9 mm VIS100M1 pistols (based on military issued VIS100 duty pistol) were almost a revolution. Both for the company and customers. Then, a bunch of accessories were re- leased, and additional color variants were also unveiled. They are factory coated with Cerakote. At the end of 2021, Fab- ryka Broni announced the introduction of three additional components to their modular rifle. 7.62 x 39 AK con- version kit The most interesting addition is the Russian 7.62 x 39 AK round conversion kit. It comes with a 16" barrel assembly with a standard muzzle device similar to the one which comes with the 5.56 rifle. Of course, the diameter of the barrel is different and the barrel features 5/8 UN- EF-2A thread instead of ½-28. 7.62 x 39 barrel has 1:9.5 twist. From the outside, the barrel is slightly different as it does not feature the fluting and lacks the loop in the bottom part of the gas block (it is only in the 10.5" barrel). Gas block and gas piston with its op- erating rod are nearly the same as in the 5.56 version, the only differences are the dimensions of gas ports due the different pressure of gasses. The gas block and gas valve are marked with C-letter (prob- ably to distinguish the 7.62 caliber). Bar- rels are serialized on the right side, other markings are PL (Poland), caliber, twist rate and length. Except for the barrel, the conversion kit features a proprietary bolt carrier group with new firing pin with retention pin and 10 round steel magazine. GROT is com- patible with most of STANAG magazines and can be fed from "banana" looking 30 round magazines for 7.62 AK rounds too. They look awkward, but who cares.
