During the test flights in a close formation with the UH-60,
a lot of attention was paid to the aerodynamic factors, such
as prop-wash and turbulence behind the tanker platform. For
the Black Hawk, with dimensions on par with Doerbird, the
pilots have not noticed any significant disruption or chang-
es in the way the aircraft flew. And we know, and it shows
in conversation with them, that they have gathered relevant
experience during similar operations during their years in the
military. They do, however, agree, that it is much easier to fly
behind the KC-1000.
Additionally, the airspeed range of the Doerbird ideally match-
es receiver helicopters and utility fixed-wing aircraft...unlike
helicopters tanking from C-130s, during which the C-130 is
typically within a few knots of its stall speed, while helicop-
ters are reaching the Vmax, making it a not ideal situation for
neither of crews. So the Doerbird offers significant safety ad-
vantages over larger multi-engine tanker/transports, in speed
margin and low turbulence, resulting in higher maneuverabil-
ity, Koelzer stated.
OPERATIONS AND FUTURE PLANS
Speaking to Chris, I also asked him about the
upcoming and current plans, and the planned test flights.
