For quite some time it seemed that DOL highway strips - sections of public roads tailored to handle
take-offs and landings of military aircraft, that were all glorious back in the 1970s and 1980s - have
lost their purpose. The scenario in which a full-scale confrontation between two superpowers wo-
uld take place has become less probable. This directly stemmed from the global geopolitics of the
1990s - with the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc, and the USSR disappearing.
