Assault rifles market is essentially split between rifles based on proven systems developed years ago by either Mikhail Kalashnikov's AK or Eugene Stoner's AR-15. Sure, there are other concepts but these two became true evergreens and an industry benchmark. But being proven and popular does not mean that there is no space for improvement. The latest SOG-LE rifles from Son of Gun are based on a less-popular AR-18 design by the very same Eugene Stoner and feature short stroke piston 5.56 rifle and 9 mm blow-back operated pistol caliber carbine (also with piston). Basic layout of firearms is based on proven 1960's concepts but with necessary modern updates and tweaks. From the outside, SOG-LE is completely different from its predecessor and has distinctive modern design. 5.56 SOG-LE is an assault rifle which might be chambered in 5.56, .300 BLK and 9 mm Para. The upper receiver is CNC machined from 6061-T6/7075-t6 aluminum Type III hard-anodized to Flat Dark Earth, Black or Steel Grey colors. Lower receiver will be ultimately made from durable polymer, but the prototype presented in Nuremberg will still have the aluminum lower. It is still under consideration if the aluminum lower receiver should remain available for custom orders or in premium variants as it would require more manufacturing time. The polymer lower receiver is significantly easier in manufacturing, decreases overall weight of the firearm and allows for custom colors. SOG-LE was developed as a select-fire assault rifle for military and law enforcement end-users but recently it became a base for its commercial variant for sport shooting. Same design, but in semi-automatic configuration only and with barrel length matching the local requirement of the ultimate destination country. To cut it short, a semi-automatic rifle meets all the export requirements for sport firearms. SOG will provide barrels in most popular lengths such as 10.5", 12.7", 14.5" and 16". Barrels will have HBAR or Government profiles and will have ½-28 threaded muzzle ends compatible with AR-style muzzle devices. Rifles for select-fire firearms will be hammered for extended life span.
