2020, both planes returned to Linköping, where they were preserved again, awaiting their future. Before being sent to the Middle East, they had undergone modernization of their onboard equipment, including the installation of a new mission system and an expanded communication subsystem, ensuring efficient operation for years to come. However, in the UAE configuration, they did not receive the Link 16 datalink, likely due to restrictions imposed by the U.S. government. The home base for the Polish Saab 340AEW will be the 44th Naval Aviation Base in Siemirowice. However, construction and renovation works, including on the runway, taxiways, aprons, and hangar infrastructure, are currently underway there, so the aircraft are temporarily stationed in Gdynia, utilizing the available facilities. Despite their naval character, which may seem surprising to some, the fuselages bear the inscription "Polish Air Force" alongside the characteristic anchor, possibly indicating integration with joint operations. The MOD has not officially explained why these aircraft were assigned to the Naval Aviation Brigade. One key argument for this decision could be operational in nature – only the 44th Naval Aviation Base operates twin-engine patrol aircraft (M28B Bryza), which means they have personnel with the competences and experience needed for quick retraining on the new aircraft type. Additionally, unofficially, one of the new aircraft's tasks will likely include over-the-horizon targeting for the Navy's anti-ship missiles (RBS-15 Mk III on Orkan-class ships and NSM in coastal defense launchers). In August, the first group of naval aviation personnel completed training, paving the way for the start of operational flights in September. Photo: Henryk Soliński Henryk Soliński AVIATION
