The demand for armored vehicles tasked with recovering damaged tanks and other
equipment from battlefields dates back to World War II. In the US, work on such
platforms, nowadays known as Armored Recovery Vehicles (ARVs), began in 1942.
Vehicles such as the M31, based on the M3 medium tank, and later the M32, based
on the M4 medium tank, as well as the more modern M74, were
developed during this period.
These vehicles served throughout World War II and the Korean War.
However, they quickly became outdated, and the U.S. Army faced
the challenge of finding a successor capable of supporting
a new generation of tanks.
