W e rolled up to the Hubertech range in our usu- al top-notch spirits, pulling into the shadow of a rather impressive shooting store—undoubte- dly a Mecca for local shooters. A few smiling faces gre- eted us, followed by the requisite paperwork, a burger voucher (score!), a speedy offload of our gear, and then we were immediately cleared hot to the first stage. It was a little surprising—no long-winded safety brief, no hand- shake from the Prez—just a firm, "First stage is that way." We were running in the Heavy Division, which meant we were stacked with essential kit (translation: a ton of we- ight). Oh, and if you're asking, our combined age is well over 150 years. We're the walking definition of "tactical geezers.". Stage 1: Rat Holes – Getting Down and Dirty The starting signal dropped, and we had to shove our aging asses into the tunnel. The first drill was engaging IDPA targets with a carbine from within the confines of a pallet-constructed tunnel, about 3.5 meter long. Then, a quick transition to the second tube. Following that, a full- -bore sprint to the pistol starting box to ring a steel gong. The grand finale? The "Kettlebell Toss": a series of che- erful throws, launching a kettlebell some dozen meters downrange. If the kettlebell landed within the scoring line, we could move up, take a shot, and repeat the process three times. It wrapped up with two more shots on a gong. Mission complete. A great opener: decent movement, trig- ger time, and zero pressure. The R.O.s (Range Officers) were chill. We were pumped and, fueled by our own jokes, eagerly headed for the next stage. REPORT
