new, upgraded version. In case the decision would be made to combine these changes together with modernization of Rosomak APCs, the battalion's combat potential would be further strengthen. New turret system with integrated Spike ATGM for Rosomak IFV The Rosomak APC's implementation started in 2005, as the alternative to the dated infantry fighting vehicle BMP-1. A contract signed by the Polish Ministry of defense assumed procurement of 690 vehicles of various variants, including the ones with the Spike ATGM launcher integrated with turret system. However, until today, no Rosomak in such configuration was delivered to the forces. Although the forces had focused on the main variant of Rosomak with Oto Melara turret system with the 30 mm Bushmaster Mk44 cannon, there was still ongoing discussion about the ways to increase this IFV's capability in defeating heavy armored combat vehicles. It should be stressed that the Rosomaks are not meant to hunt and kill tanks, but it is likely that they can encounter such opponent on the battlefield. Taking into consider- ation only three main characteristics of the tank: an effective firing range, main weapon system's caliber, and thickness of armor, the result of its engagement with Rosomak is not hard to pre- dict. Even though the IFV's 30 mm cannon can fire armor-piercing sub-caliber ammunition, it has no chance to win. The vehicle crew has very limit- ed options in this situation, and usually use vehi- cle's good maneuverability capabilities and either escapes or, after reducing a distance, damage an opponent's vehicle (in very favorable conditions, it is possible to destroy a tank by attacking it from behind, where its armor is not that thick). The only weapon system, able to cope with such task, available to a battalion commander is ATGM Spike, which is the main equipment of anti-tank platoon of battalion's support company. Although it is modern and effective weapon, due to its lo- cation far from motorized companies, low mobility and small numbers, it does not affect significantly tactical situation on the battlefield. www.fragoutmag.com
