dreadful weather. wind and rains which fell on my back. large volumes of snow around me. now, i understood against what i had been warned. i walk through the gorge under Askija volcano. the rivers which i forded across turned out to be snowed under. flowing water is located deeply under a deep ice. the external layer of snow mixed with sand and mud perfectly blended with blue ice protruding in certain penetrations. walking across white rivers i had to watch carefully my surroundings. i could not allow for falling into a snow fissure, a slippage and a contusion. i am heading towards trollandyngja. on the left side, in a distance approx. 20km, i noticed a huge protuberant fissure created after an eruption of bardarbunga volcano. unfortunately, this zone was still closed due to the heavy earthquakes and a fear of the subsequent fissure eruption. All the time my route went along a border of the volcanic safety zone. the tenth hour of walking, every now and again wading in the snow, labyrinths of volcanic lava, once in a while fording a river. overcoming water obstacles pleasantly cooled my feet suffering from pain, but after a while a temperature became uncomfortably low. it was important to ensure safety – a river current was sometimes impetuous, and a bottom and protruding rocks unstable. i put my feet carefully, checking up a stability of the ground. i insured myself by sticks in order not to get wet my equipment. i enjoyed greatly drinking water and replenishing my water supplies, what outshined all inconveniences – finally, i had enough of it. this day final destination was a small lake in the volcanic odadahraun labyrinth. After reaching it and encamping an awareness that all water is only mine, and that i could drink as much as i wanted was something what makes is happy and full of motivation and determination in order to walk through this icelandic hell. www.fragoutmag.com
