It should be noted that burst fired by single shooter will not be alerted by the system as a multiple threats but as single one. In the situation with two shooters in the same line of fire but in different distance, Boomerang iii will alert with one azimuth but with two positions. Multiple shooters placed in different directions and shooting simultaneously will not be a case for Boomerang system. The maximum detection range covers the maximum effective range of detected weapon types. Sensors, the seven easily-replaceable microphones and the boomguard are mounted to the mast which could be installed on the ground or on board of the military vehicles. Single Boomerangs might be configured into the Boomerang Surveillance Awareness network with virtually unlimited number of masts. It integrates shot reports from multiple Boomerangs and provides audible and visual alerts on a centrally located laptop computer in FOB or camp. The vehicle kits are fitted with position and heading sensors which will compensate the vehicle movement. Precise detection of threat distance and location might be calculated during movement, but the maximum speed is about 60 mph (96 kmh) The Boomerang iii has configurable exclusion zone allows suppression of alerts from outgoing fire in distance from 10 to 70 meters from the mast so the system will not report shots fired from friendlies. Only incoming fire will be alerted. The more compact solution is Boomerang Warrior-X acoustic gunshot detection system for individual soldier. The sensor unit has dimensions of 4,3" (10,92 cm) x 3,2" (8,13 cm) x 1,7" (4,32 cm) and the total number of microphones was decreased from seven to six. The weight is around 11oz. (310 grams). Warrior-X should be mounted relatively high; the manufactures suggests the shoulder. The system has small, wired monochromatic LCD display were localization and direction to the threat is displayed. Additionally, there is also audio alert about the threat through the built-in speaker or through the small earpiece with the standard 3,5mm jack plug. The voice information consists of azimuth, distance and elevation. The elevation in both mounted and dismounted variants of Boomerang is reported as general HIGH or LOW. As wearer moves the system continually tracks movement & updates display with new relative position to shooter and it operates in all orientations (standing, prone, kneeling) with full motion compensation. The Boomerang Warrior-X creates a detection zone of up to 25 meters around the sensor array and is capable to detect shooter location up to 500 meters. It is powered with two CR123A batteries which provide 12 hours of continuous operation. The system might be also mounted on small robots or UGVs or as a force protection component in checkpoints if the Boomerang III is not available.
