After a few hours of marching start- ed a twilight. the sun which was on the sky, was hidden behind a skyline. At the same time a temper- ature changed. without the sun you can get chilled. i walked to the place in which a road ended and begun a desert. there i encamped for the first time. the first contact with the icelandic weather conditions and a temper- ature led to several conclusions: i must encamp before sunset in order to be a able to benefit from positive temperatures (5–6°c) – af- ter dusk a temperature dropped to 0°c. the first meal from freeze- dried food and the next concern. if an organism would react well for such a form of food, whether i would not have problems with my stomach? i was afraid of that most of all - during diarrhoea an organ- ism is dehydrated, a morale and immunity are lost. luckily, all was all right. when i went to bed, i cracked for a while an exit to my tent and took a look at empty space, with small mountains on the horizon – the Askija volcano aureole, an aim of my walk. i felt wind, and above a true horizon i saw quickly moving grey, black and dark blue clouds – it will be raining! the first night was a hard experi- ence. i had to get used to a sound of drops hitting a tent membrane, blows of wind, an inconvenience and a small inner volume of the tent. in the morning weather was very friendly. there were a lot of sunrays, no wind, in the distance i saw a fog within the odadahraun desert. my first breakfast. muesli, sunflower seeds, tortilla and hot tea. every day i had the same meal set: in the morning muesli, before lunch a small high-protein bar, tea, then a small high-protein bar, a pack of sesame cookies, and at the end of the day, after encamping, a warm meal: 125g or 250g of freeze-dried food. usually, pasta with beef and other stuff. it was the most pleas- ant moment during the entire day. A correction of the load-bearing system of the rucksack, tightening it, lacing shoes, and then i hit the road. the landscape was chang- ing every little moment. once i walked through green hills, once through icy streams due to which i had always water in abundance. the icelandic water form desert or mountain streams is delicious! it is a strange description for water, but this one was like that, it was perfect. www.fragoutmag.com
