www.fragoutmag.com The heckler&koch hk G28 desiGnaTed marksman rifle premiered in oc Tober 2011 was selec Ted by The German bundeswehr ThaT same year. iT is a modi- fied, miliTarized version of The civilian hk417 varianT, previously sold To The civilians as mr308 (or mr762 in usa). BThis is the Designated Marksman Rifle, or the infan- try-grade precision rifle – as opposed to the sniper ri- fle. It is a semiautomatic-only 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Win) meant to replace the MSG 90A2 or PSG-1A2 sniper rifles. The rifle is gas-operated, piston-variation of the AR-15 weapon platform. The gas block has got a two-setting gas regulating valve – with N setting for Normal condi- tions, and S setting for firing Suppressed. The fire con- trol group is single-shot-only, and what is not typical for the AR-15 platform – the safety is so called European Style, i.e. the safety can be applied with hammer both cocked and released. All other AR-15s can have their safeties applied only when the hammer is cocked, as the Americans tend to consider a de-cocked weapon as made safe anyway. The magazines are HK417 compatible, smoked clear polymer, 10 or 20 rounds. The 420 mm barrel gives the .308 M80 Ball an initial velocity of 780 mps (2560 fps) and 3000 Joules of en- ergy. The barrel concludes in a rather sizeable muzzle device, combining flash hider and muzzle break. That muzzle device is suppressor-compatible. The controls are typical for the AR-15 platform weapon. The only difference is the ambidextrous, doubled safety lever. Mag- azine release, bolt release and forward assist are true AR-15ish, just differently shaped. The pistol grip is identical to those used on 5.56 mm HK416A5s, and is of the enhanced ergonomics. It also houses an internal storage enclosure for a rifle-specific multi-tool. The rifle is delivered with hardware capable of completing two different configurations, Heavy (7.5 kg) or Patrol (5.9 kg). The variations between the two are different stock, different rail handguards, bipods (both mounted on the MIL-STD-1913 rail, i.e. quick-detachable) and different sights.
