It was developed by Polish Special Forces MAJ Arkadiusz Kups in the early 1990s when he was then a chief training officer in the elite 56th Commando Company of Polish Armed Forces sometimes known in Western countries as Polish Spetsnaz. However, the origins of the Combat 56 system should be found in the earlier period of his service when Kups was intern lieutenant in divisional special operations company (recce company) where he was responsible for hand- to-hand combat training. In the 56th Commando Company he has gained experience, combining all issues in one whole with the tactical and shooting training. At that time in this unit has gathered a group of people oriented towards modern training and experimenting: Demczuk, Kups, Patalong, Domachowski, Dudka – it has developed above mediocrity. A former chief training officer in 56.Company, MAJ Żołnowski a men who has been an unusual character or a further General Jan Kempara have inoculated those people a lot. The unit which has had at its disposal freedom within a scope of training has grown into a leader among the special units in Poland. The Combat 56 System is mainly associated with a contact fighting, but its significant part is inextricably connected with tactics, shooting or other subjects of special forces training. In the handgun training included in the techniques of the Combat 56, there are noticeable influences from the con- tacts with the Hungarian special forces and solutions learned from the British. Certain specific elements of the grips, stances or positioning a weapon can be seen on the old photos – despite a fact that they are a compilation of the various patterns it is noticeable that the whole is well thought out and consistent. Nowadays nobody is shocked be- cause of this, but in those times – early 1990s – is was a great step forward, the more that the army held on tightly the archaic regulations and rules of training. Then the army was still not ready for – similarly trained only the GROM special mission units, which was in structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and still totally secret in those times.
