The original 7.62x54r PK machine gun (russian: Пулемёт Калашникова: Pulemyot Kalashnikova, or "Kalashnikov's Machinegun") was introduced to the service in soviet army in 1961 as a replacement for all existing machine guns and heavy machine guns. Eight years after, the modi- fied PKM variant was developed – it was significantly lighter since the total weight was cut down from 9 kilograms to roughly 7.5 kilograms. The PKM has integrated folded bipod under the barrel and in this standard configuration it can be deployed as a light machine gun or squad automatic weap- on. When the machine gun is placed on tripod mount (6T2 or newer 6T5) it can be used as a heavy machine gun or AA gun. The PK machine gun was also a base for a vehi- cle-mounted PKT machine gun (ПК Танковый, PK Tank) developed as co-axial weapon for the armored vehicles and tanks. This gun features longer and heavier barrel, a gas regulator and an electric solenoid trigger. The stock was completely removed. PKM/PKMS
