Aleksander Jan Michał Tarnawski, nicknamed: "Terrace" ("Upłaz"), "Peak" ("Wierch"). Born 8th January 1921 in Słocin (now a part of Rzeszów) – the Polish chemical engineer, a soldier of the Polish Armed Forces in the West, officer of the Home Army, second lieutenant of armored forces, Silent Unseen. He volunteered to serve in occupied country. After an intensive training in diversion and special operations he was sworn in on 23th September 1943 in the Section III of the Commander-in-Chief's Staff. After an internship in the British units he was transported to the Main Transfer Base in Brindisi, Italy. A drop was done in the night 16th-17th April 1944 as a part of the "Weller 12" operation charged by Capt.. Edward Bohdanowicz. In the "Weller 12" operation there were dropped: Stefan Gorski, 2nd Lt nickna- med "Coast" ("Brzeg"), Marian Kuczyński "Switch" ("Zwrotnica") and Aleksander Tarnawski "Terrace" ("Upłaz"). The drop was performed to the "Couch" ("Kanapa") drop-zone, situated near Baniocha village, next to Góra Kalwaria near Warsaw. Service in the country After an "acclimatization" in Warsaw and Świder, Aleksander Tarnawski, 2nd Lt nicknamed "Terrace" ("Upłaz") in May 1944 was sent to Nowo- gródek Home Army District, where he reached as a member of the "Todt" organization about 22nd June 1944 together with the other Silent Unseen, Gustaw Heczka, which whom he landed near Baniocha. Career after 1945 In 1945 he was employed in the Polish Radio in Warsaw. Then he worked as: •laboratory assistant in the Walenty Wawel Coal Mine in Ruda Śląska (1945–1947); •junior assistant, and then senior assistant in the Department of Physical Chemistry of the Silesian University of Technology (1948–1961); •assistant professor in Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals (1961–1963) •senior laboratory engineer (since 1964 – manager in Pigment Depart- ment) in the Institute of Plastics and Paints Industry (1963–1990); •senior specialist as above, on a half-time basis (since its retirement in 1990 to the end of 1994). from Wikipedia www.fragoutmag.com
