The Russian Airborne
Troops – VDV (Russian:
Воздушно-десантные войска)
are a branch of the Russian armed
forces which during a conflict are to
be at disposal of the General Staff of the
Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
Despite such doctrinal records in practice the
VDV are the most frequently used as a spear of
the military forces and they are used rapid reaction
forces – as such VDV was deployed in Georgia in 2008
and in Crimea in 2014.
