For most of the people I have the opportunity to see at the range, shooting training is mostly the drills. Some of them are simple – just draw and double-tap on a close target, others are more imaginative – with magazine ex- change, stoppage drills, handgun to rifle transition drills etc. Most of these are static, which is a result of several things: Ä it is the safety rules and range regulations, Ä the number of people training at the same time Ä fixed furniture of the range: benches, side screens etc. But in reality the first and foremost reason is much more prosaic. We just like to repetition what we al- ready mastered and we do not like to sweat. That's our 'comfort zone' at the range: we remain there focused on grouping, holstering and timing rather than anything else. The 'comfort zone' is a term used in personal coaching. It means a state of mind, in which we tend to run on auto-pilot: we act and think within delineated borders, in a way that we know and render safe. Coaches try to encourage the trainees to leave their comfort zone in order to improve one's living standard, make a career, buy one self a Lambo or a more attractive mate. In our case the 'comfort zone' is seven yards from the target on the same range as ever, repeating the same actions over and over, immediately awarded by a still improving grouping and accuracy. That's the zone when everything is exactly like it should be: bullets impact where we send them, stoppages are cleared immediately and faultlessly, the weapon that not catch on clothing during a draw, even if drawn from appendix carry. Same thing with the sports shooters in IPSC or IDPA. They have their own training methods and train to achieve certain skills, needed for strictly governed competition. www.fragoutmag.com
