BARRETT REC107
Another rifle from Barrett armory we had in
hands on the very same day was 2nd gener-
ation of piston-driven Barrett REC7 (Reliability
Enhanced Carbine), basically the "just another
AR". Currently, there are two caliber variants of
REC7 available - 5.56x45 NATO and 6.8x43
Remington SPC (Special Purpose Cartridge).
It can come with three different barrel lengths
- 11.5", 16" and 18". Pictured is 16" semi-auto
REC7 in .223.
Even the Barrett is best known for its sniper ri-
fles, the REC7 is not first AR-style rifle devel-
oped by the company. First design was the 6.8
SPC M468 (basically the direct gas impinge-
ment operated, rechambered M4) which was an
attempt to create an optimal CQB carbine for
special operations forces. Use of more powerful
ammunition and the DI system made the M468
less reliable than the M4 carbine it was trying
to replace. Barrett finally decided to cancel this
program and to develop the REC7.
