helicopters have been lost in accidents since that time. The
main role of the Merlin HM.1 were ship-based operations –
ranging from aircraft carriers to Type 23 frigates. A couple
of years later, in 2006, the Royal Navy decided to upgrade
30 HM.1 to the HM.2 version. The first upgraded helicopters
were delivered in 2013. The main changes included new
mission computer, transforming the pilot's cabin into a glass
cockpit, electro-optical camera and multi-static processing for
the sonar system. Moreover, the HM.2 helicopters are able to
complete a broad range of other missions: ASW, ASuW, special
forces support, transport and rescue operations. This mission
flexibility comes from modular structure of the cargo bay, user
configurable.
In the case of Italy, the order was smaller – 10 helicopters.
The upgrade program for the helicopters is planned and the
effects of the works may actually meet the requirements set
initially by UK, and perhaps those set by Poland.
