The SySTem and ITS componenTS Rheinmetall's "System Infanterie" networks soldiers and their sensors and effectors – including unmanned systems and ve- hicles – into hard-hitting systems of systems, creating a unified situation picture and bringing individual components into the network-enabled operational loop. The system is designed for infantry operations in difficult terrain, including built-up urban environments. Among other things, the Düssledorf-based Group's "System Infanterie" encompasses the following systems and components: the IdZ-ES soldier system and TacNet com- munication system; the modular RS556* assault rifle and RS40 build-on grenade launcher; the UMF unmanned multipurpose vehicle; and the Boxer* multipurpose wheeled armored vehicle equipped with a two-man LANCE turret. how The SySTem componenTS InTeRacT Rheinmetall demonstrated the system using a short scenario, in which an infantry section is tasked with reconnoitering a possible workshop for making improvised explosive devices in a village. Covered by the Boxer, the soldiers – equipped with IdZ-ES and armed with RS556 assault rifles – advance toward the village. They are accompanied by the UMF, deployed in a forward recon- naissance and surveillance role. Owing to the command system, the position of friendly forces as well as detected enemy elements and other situational data are displayed on monitors and digital situation maps. This provides the combat group with a uniform, constantly upda- ted situation picture, making it easier and quicker for the section leader to coordinate his assets. www.fragoutmag.com
