ro-pattern features in order to offer the best balance and compromise between the two. The scope of issues related to camouflage the- ory is very broad and related to many fields of science and technology, but the fundamental aspect for a camouflage solution to be effec- tive is the color scheme matching the sur- rounding environment, feature of a micro- and macro-patter, and repeat. Pattern repeatability is perfectly exemplified by the wz. 93 "Pantera" camouflage currently in use. It's enough to take a look at the back of the jacket and count the number the same blob appears – the weave re- peat of wz. 93 is approx. 40 x 20 cm, while that of UCP/MARPAT is approx. 60 x 90 cm. Other elements, such as positive patterns (as similar to the surrounding as possible) and negative patterns (a mixture of hardly identifiable back- ground elements, noise), or a 3D simulation make camouflage all the more effective. MAPA and its history Those into military subject matter are proba- bly familiar with names like MultiCam, A-TACS, Kryptek, PenCott – each of these patterns has been developed following different assump- tions and using different methods, but they have all shared one main function – camou- falge. The MAPA camouflage pattern was de- signed in Poland in 2011 by Maciej Dojlitko, a then doctoral student of the Faculty of Archi- tecture and Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, and caused quite a stir in the envi- ronment because of an innovative mixture of shapes and colors, and a completely different approach to camouflage design. The first pho- tos presenting the camouflage effectiveness in a woodland area caused a big commotion in the military because of the fact that the hu- man silhouette was completely blurred as seen with the naked eye even from a small distance. Other photos showed a "back to back" com- equipment
