LIve fIRe demo of RS556 The event also provided an opportunity to fire the RS556 for the first time in the presence of the press. The RS556 is a joint pro- ject of Rheinmetall and Steyr Mannlicher. It is a candidate for the German Bundeswehr's assault rifle system project. Selection is due to take place at the end of 2018. Two versions of the RS556 were available for the live fire de- monstration, one with a 14.5" barrel and an Aimpoint M4 red dot aiming device and a 6 x magnification scope, the other with a 14.5" barrel and Minox ZP 1-8 x 24 scope. Two frames with four torso-sized steel plates each served as targets at ranges of 100 and 200 metres, along with a disused delivery van at a range of 100 metres. For a roughly one-hour period, 15 participants fired a total of 1,140 rounds from the two weapons, mostly in rapid single shot mode as well as in short bursts. Hitting the delivery van was easy, and the same was true of the con- siderably smaller steel plate targets. There were no malfunctions. SummaRy In staging this impressive presentation of the "System Infantrie" and its components, Rheinmetall has undersco- red once again its ability to furnish the world's military and security forces with the best-possible equipment.
