For most of you, steel targets are just a big chunk of randomly cut steel hung on the frame. In fact, these are tad more complicated stuff than you thought. They are more than complicated and sometimes they could be an engineering challenge. Well-designed steel targets must be compliant with some strict requirements. First of all, safety. It must be anti-ricochets so no bullets fragments or shrapnels flying wherever they want, especially toward to the shooter. The material used for targets manufacturing must be durable and withstand multiple shot without piercing (there are several different steels for different rounds and you can't just use .308 to hit pistol-dedicated target). "Thicker" does not always mean better. The standard industry grade steel sheet will not stop the bullet and it is not safe, as after hit it will generate dangerous high velocity fragments going to different directions. Thicker piece of cheap steel will not compensate that, but will add weight. A lot of weight and you won't be even move that gigantic target on your own. The foot rest or frame can't be just a metal pole – it must provide a proper angle, shock absorption, stable position and must be capable to withstand multiple hits (otherwise, parts must be quickly replaceable). It can't generate ricochets or fragments plus it must be user-proof: even a thick steel coil might be hit and destroyed. In case of more complex targets such as LOLIPOP, TREE, PLATE RACK or different types of STARS are far more complicated, because additional parts come to a way and part which allow the movement or rotation. Everything must be good-looking, easy to transport and safe to carry (no sharp edges or whatsoever). To sum up: to build a good and effective steel target, a visit in your local Home Depot or junkyard and a blowtorch might be not enough. You need top-class steel, engineer's knowledge and technical back end. That's why quality targets are not cheap, but are way safer and will serve long. www.fragoutmag.com
