O ne part of the research programs was new camouflage pattern for urban environ- ment. During the second edition of URBAN WARRIOR field training exercises which took part in March 1999 in Oakland, CA near San Francisco, when Marines appeared in brand new battle dress uniforms featuring new blocky camouflage pattern for urban combat. It was the first (and last) time when Marines used the camouflage pattern commonly known as T-pattern. But from historical point of view, it wasn't a first approach to use of dedicated urban pattern. During Urban Warrior'98 FTX in January 1998, some Marines were wearing the BDU uniforms in com- mercial camouflage pattern, which were variation of standard M81 Woodland, but with black-grey-white colors. The very same pattern as worn by Marines under command of Ed Harris in the 1996 blockbuster "The Rock". Coincidence, huh? Couple years earlier, in 1993, US Army Natick Labs were experimenting with two-sided BDU uniforms with reversible camou- I n 1990s, the USMC command decided to launch URBAN WARRIOR program to increase the capa- bilities of warfighters in the urbanized terrain. The forecasts were that in nearest future, all low inten- sity conflicts will take place in highly or very highly developed urban areas. History of warfare confirms that is cities are extremally deadly for advancing forces. Except new techniques, tactics and strate- gies, USMC decided to conduct some experiments in the field of equipment, both individual and unit equip- ment, which could essentially improved lethality and survivability on the battlefield.
