MPIMS & M-MPIMS The MPIMS mines (also known as Hailstorm) are modern take on the classic Claymores. They were launched against the foil screens and paper targets (set up in a dozen me- ters distance) to explain and show how the fragments are spread. MPIMS is a Direct Fragmentation Charge available in two versions with steel or tungsten bearings. There are 924 bearings with a muzzle velocity of 2,700 meters per second in a repeatable fragmentation pattern. Complete MPIMS system consists of MILES/USAG/KASI compati- ble training and simulation system incorporated with py- rotechnics, sounds and lights for force on force training, two Less-than-Lethal systems and two Lethal directed charges. The basic MPIMS mine is similar in size to legacy M18 (think about thick book) and have maximum range of 100 meters. The mine is most effective in 60-degree area and 50 meters range: the bearings are capable to pene- trate 2 mm of steel. It allows for five hits for square meter in 50 meters distance. M-MPIMS is miniaturized version of MPIMS, known also as Halistorm Mini. It is 40% smaller and has 315 bearing (steel or tungsten) with 2,300 meters per second muzzle velocity. The maximum range is up to 50 meters (2 hits per sqm) and the effective range is 20-30 meters (up to 5 hits per sqm). The bearings are capable to penetrate 2 mm steel sheet from 40 meters. MPIMS are insensitive munitions. An impact of bullet will not initiate the explosives. During the demo, M-MPIMS was directly hit .308 Winchester round from sniper rifle. The mine was destroyed but it didn't explode. www.fragoutmag.com
