Summary
Analyzing the current shape in which the Spanish Navy finds itself, one
should still remember that the shape of the service has been, to a great
extent, influenced by the budgetary crisis that influenced Spain during
the last decade. For the military that crisis translated into a long term
of cuts and savings which had a major detrimental impact on the mod-
ernization programs. Between 2008 and 2018 the Navy has only com-
missioned 2 surface combatants, a single supply vessel, and a series
of 6 BAM patrol vessels. The submarine procurement programs have
been hampered as well. As the economy has been getting better, and
as the procurement of the F-110 frigates has begun, a chance emerged
for the Spanish Navy to leave the crisis behind.
