Spain, ever since, has always been basing its strength on access to and
control of the sea. Nowadays the Spanish Navy is considered one of the
foundations of Spain's independence. It is viewed as a tool that can be used
to effectively exercise the state's foreign policy. Considering the newly
emerging threats that would be posing a challenge for the European naval
forces over the upcoming decades, one should have a closer look at the
condition in which Armada EspaƱola finds itself in, and at the plans that
the service has made, for the upcoming years.
