Single-use gloves The gloves for single use are the essential and most commonly used protective measure among the services. Currently, the nitrile gloves (Category I) are the most widely used ones, which can only be used in the low risk conditions. The gloves of this category protect against superficial mechanical injury to the epidermis, tempera- ture not exceeding 50°C and chemicals with very weak and easily reversed effects. Category 1 gloves are widely used when examining a luggage, during a body search and when securing an evidentiary material. The use of the single-use gloves is most often aimed at preventing a destruction or a de- formation of fingerprint and biological evidence. In case of some crimes and related traces, the use of the gloves prevents trace/evidence contamination with the trace amounts of explosives - this mainly pertains to the fire- arm-related crimes (GSRs) and involves the use of the explosives (trace amounts of explosives). In so far as most Category 1 single-use gloves protect against chemical contamination, not all gloves remain the best defence against a contact with biological material, and on the day-to-day basis the officer on duty usually has no impact on what factors he/she may be exposed to in the concerned situation. Therefore, when choosing disposable gloves, you should pay attention to a degree of protection from exposure to biological agents. The gloves protecting against biological (and at the same time chemical) factors are usually sold under the "medical gloves", "medical protective gloves" or "diag- nostic gloves" trade names. These gloves should meet EN 455 standard, which guarantees that: 1. there are no holes in the product through which pathogens can penetrate, 2. adequate stretch and tear resistance are provided, 3. gloves feature a positive biological assessment (may be in contact with the tissues), 4. the best before date is 3 years from the date of manufacturing. If you are the officer, choose single-use Category 1 EN 455 gloves Photo: WOT Photo: Policja Photo: WOT ANALYSIS
