After about 20 minutes we are reaching the destination and we are landing on the pad near the hospital where the ambulance is waiting. The physician and paramedic are heading to the E.R. so they can assess the status of the patient to see if one's might be transported onboard. Then they are returning to the helicopter, now with the patient, and we are back airborne. The procedure is similar. The helicopter takes off, reaches the 1000 feet and is switched to the autopilot mode. After 22 minutes we are reaching the ultimate destination, a hospital in Warsaw. During the flight we are crossing the CTR EPWA – the flight just a couple feet over the skyscrapers is amazing! Both for me and for the crew. They love to fly in such "restricted areas''. On the helipad, the medical team from the hospital is waiting for us. We hand over the patient to them and then we have a couple of minutes to relax. Then we have to check the equipment and we are ready to return to EPBC Babice. Shortest way home is again through the CTR EPWA. After returning to base, we are doing a quick check up of the helo. Physician and paramedic are filling in all the necessary paperwork and checking the medical equipment. Helicopter is fueled up and its condition is checked again. It takes us about 10 minutes. Helo and the crew are ready for another mission. Since we now "met each other", we can continue the morning conversation. It gets more interesting. "It's far more exciting job than sitting in the hospital and dealing with fever. Here I am dealing with wide spectrum of cases. Effects of my work are imme- diate. Sometimes positive, sometimes it goes not so well…" says the physician. www.fragoutmag.com
