The first batch of GROT rifles were designated as C16 FB-M1, so everyone expected the im- proved version to be designated as C16 FB-M2, but the company has decided to change the suffix letter from M to an A, hence the FB-A2. The contract for deliveries of GROT latest variant was signed on 8th July 2020 and the con- tract was awarded for 2020- 2026 timeframe. The total num- ber of 18,305 rifles will be deliv- ered. The C16 FB-A2 rifles will become a standard issue firearm for the Polish Armed Forces and will ultimately replace the 5.56 mm Beryl assault rifles and 7.62 AKM/AKMS currently in service. GROT C16 FB-A2 features multiple changes which were implemented to eliminate prob- lems which were reported by the soldiers during the initial fielding of the M1 variant. There are also some other enhancements to improve the rifle. The main change is the ex- tended handguard which solves two problems. The legacy stock of GROT is rather short so tall- er shooters can have problems with proper grip. The longer handguard eliminates this prob- lem. The top accessory rail was extended with additional 9 segments and two M-LOK attachment slots were added to the sides. The weapon sling quick-detach sockets were moved from the 5 & 7 o'clock po- sition to the 3 & 6 o'clock on the side of the handguard. This will eliminate the problem of rotation of the rifle when shouldered on sling. The extended handguard cov- ers the gas regulator, so the access to the regulator is now more restricted, but this can solve the problem with regula- tors falling out during shooting. In the FB-A1 version, the has reg- ulator could be rotated even with a sling during moving. There were numerous field modifica- tions done by soldiers to secu- rethe gas regulator. Some were primitive but some were even M-LOK mounted. www.fragoutmag.com
