structures). New unit was planned
to be prepared for sabotage opera-
tions against enemy ships and ves-
sels or coastal structures.
Initial plan assumed creation of a 100
man squadron of combat divers (the
number would be doubled for war-
time). Unfortunately, in 1975 Navy
decided to establish only a 35-man
unit (50% professional sailors and
50% of conscrips) under the name of
Wydział Działań Specjalnych (Special
Operations Detachment) or Wydział
Płetwonurków 3. Flotylli Okrętów
(3rd Flotilla Divers Detachment).
But unofficially and most common,
the unit was named as the location
of its new home – the Formoza. To
keep the unit in secrecy, the sailors
had "Okręty Hydrograficzne" (Hydro-
graphic Vessels) band on their hats.
First years of the unit were time
of experiments and development of
procedures. Information about tac-
tics, training methods and equipment
were scarce. Divers own experience,
publicly available information from
the Western countries were base.
Soviet Union didn't want to share
their knowledge.
