A fter transition to HEMS flights and bigger aircraft like Eurocopter EC-135, pilot starts his Type Rating for twin-engine helicopter and HEMS/EMS-specific training including multi crew cooperation, landing in remote location oraz full coverage of all onboard systems. Part of training is done with the usage of full-motion simulator, another part with the real aircraft and part as only ground school. Usually Spring batch of students require about 9 months to be fully operational, while Autumn one needs about 9-12 months, due to worse weather and shorter days. "Small Fleet" is quite unique in European or even worldwide scale - it's very rare that Medical Air Rescue/Air Ambulances have addi- tional fleet of training aircraft for building up hours and on-demand flights. Despite its uniqueness it's working really well and ensures impressive results. Incorporating of ATO into more expanded organization like Polish Medical Air Rescue grants also lower running costs and ensures continued training of pilots as well as allows to better fulfill operational duties.
