Perry frigates, as the backbone of the combat component of the Polish Navy. The Miecznik program dates back to 2013 and the dreaded analytical-conceptual phase that would result in an acquisition of new escort vessels. The assumption was to equip the Navy with three "Coastal Defense Vessels" (multi-role cor- vettes). They were to be commissioned by the end of the de- cade. As the Analytical-Conceptual Phase dragged on, it was con- sidered viable to procure a higher number of vessels using the very same hull. Three "patrol vessels with mine countermea- sure function" joined the three "Coastal Defense Vessels" list- ed above. The former have been codenamed "Czapla". The idea, even though justified in theory, as it allows the Navy to use the synergy to diminish the unit cost of the individual vessels, inspired some doubts, regarding the reasonable nature of the Modernization Programs The current modernization programs pursued by the Polish Navy date back to the 2013-2022 Technical Modernization Plan, ad- opted by the Polish Armed Forces. Specifically, the Navy-relat- ed matters are covered under one of 14 operational programs, named "Counteracting Threats at Sea". Most of the aforesaid pro- grams have been continued, within the framework of the 2021- 2035 Technical Modernization Plan, approved in October 2019. One truly relevant program was added to the list of modernization undertakings, also known under the name "Murena".
