The hK MP7 was designed as a Personal defense weaPon (Pdw) for rear-echelon logisTics TrooPs, afV or heaVy weaPons crews. Before The MP7 They were using The classic sMgs or carBine Versions of Their arMies' assaulT rifles. The real SMGs (those firing pistol rounds) suffered from two main disadvantages: insufficient range and lack of body armor piercing capability, which started to be popular in mid-1990s. The carbines were capable to shoot through the body armor, but were still large and heavy enough to be cumbersome for troops that were not riflemen by definition. Plus – they paid for their reduced size with hefty recoil and muzzle flash because of the shorter barrel. www.fragoutmag.com
