Semi-automatic sniper rifles Bolt-action rifles still prevail in the sniper scene. However, due to lessons learned with the Designated Marksman Rifle (DMR) in the infan- try, semi-automatic rifles are increasingly gain- ing traction to expand sniper's capabilities. The US Armed Forces deployed these Semi-Automatic Sniper Systems aka SASS for the first time in the early 1990s for the special forces. Since 2005 the Knights Armament M110 SASS rifles were fielded. This 7.62x51 mm semi-automatic rifle is used an addition to the M24 in the US Army and the M40A5 in the US Marine Corps – both rifles based on the Remington 700 bolt action rifle. In the USMC they will replace all the older semi-automatic M39 EBRs and Mk11. In 2010 the United Kingdom started procuring a 7.62x51 mm semi-automatic rifles in the scope of an urgent operational requirement program. The L129A1 with match barrel and two-stage trigger from US Lewis Machine&Tool Company (LMT) has been delivered to combat units in Afghanistan in May 2010. In late 2011, Belgian FN Herstal shown the 7.62x51 mm SCAR-H Precision Rifle featuring two-stage match trigger module and a 508-mm-long, free-floating, chrome-plated and heavier match barrel with an extended STANAG 4694 accesso- ry rail (MIL-STD-1913/Picatinny compatible) on top of the receiver to enable the successive mounting of scopes and clip-on night vision devices in front of the scope. FN Herstal guarantees accuracy below 1 MOA. With the H&K G28 DMR, the Bundeswehr may notionally have procured a pure scoped rifle after a short albeit turbulent tender process but, in fact, it is a true SASS considering its outstanding perfor- mance parameters and high-quality accessories. What's interesting, the G28 is based on the match- grade Heckler&Koch MR762 rifle and was used in the ISAF operations since May 2012. The G28 is delivered with an extensive package of ac- cessories including a customized Schmidt&Bender PMII 3-20x50 variable magnification scope and Aimpoint Micro T1 as "piggy-back" back-up solution for close quarters combat. The specifically devel- oped 7.62 mm x 51 DMR ammunition significantly enhances the on-target accuracy of the rifle – ob- jective: a hit pattern not exceeding 1.5 MOA which corresponds to a dispersion of some 45 mm at 100 meters. Yet headshots at 300 meters and body ANALYTICS
