when using explosives, the attackers have a (false) sense of anonymity and impunity. on the other hand, the firepower of devicel made from simple materials guarantees the desired effect. The biggest advantage of IED for terrorists is, most certainly, the ability to easily adapt its ap- plication to the capabilities of the enemy. The first spectacular attack with the use of an improvised explosive device was the attack on margaret Thatcher in brighton in 1984. nearly half a year earlier, during the renovation of the hotel the Prime minister visited, bombers hid an explosive device. This event drew the attention of services (around the world) responsible for the security of heads of state. The next stage in the development of bombings was the explo- sion of Pan america airliner over the scottish town, lockerbie, in 1988. The crash caused death of 270 people. This was the first attack on an aircraft with the use of ieds. Then, seven years later, in the attack on the federal building in oklahoma city, attackers used a large-scale homemade explosive - anfo. so, the material widely used by the Taliban, was already known six years before the invasion on afghanistan. in the same year, during the attack on the Tokyo subway, the terrorists crossed the limits even further by arming their improvised explosive de- vices with the gas called 'sarin' nowadays, the use of IED evolves in two ways explains Piotr, head of eod instructors in the global Protection group Training centre - on the one hand, bombers use more and more easily ac- cessible materials, while on the other hand they develop tactics for IED usage. Terrorists adapt to their opponent's abilities. They are able to adapt the attack method to the area of operation and the local community, as well as the possibility of its detection by the security services. in the countries not being a war zone, such as Turkey or Tunisia, we could simply notice some increase in the number of suicide bombings and attacks with a car bomb. loose outfits worn by the inhabitants of a country and a large num- ber of uncontrolled vehicles make it easy to hide explosive devices and carry out effective terror- ist attacks. but, i.a. in ukraine, apart from clas- sic IEDs, we deal with HOAX IEDs - dummies of explosive devices. Their aim is to check the preparation of government services and cause of alarm among the civilians. ANALYSIS
