Crucial decisions about the selection and purchase of the successor ofBoeing VC-25As
used to carry the President of the United States were made at the beginning of August
2017. VC-25A's are extensively modified Boeing 747-200s, supplied to the US Air Force
in 1990 – which was when they replaced a pair of VC-137s, i.e. the military variant of
the Boeing 707. But today, it is more and more difficult to handle and maintain them
because of e.g. discontinued production of spare parts.
