First gen of M&P® series was announced in 2005 and was available in multiple sizes, styles and caliber variants. M2.0 pistols are pretty similar on the outside – it's still a modern striker-fire polymer frame gun with high grip to barrel bore axis ratio for reduced muzzle rise and faster aim recovery but there are multiple innovations and internal upgrades introduced twelve years later. We had our hand on the 9 mm Para variant, first from new line up. The striker-fire, semi-automatic Smith & Wesson M&P®9 M2.0 pistol is 9 mm Para pistol. It's a short, recoil-operated, semi-auto using a Browning-type locking system. It features a unique take-down method that doesn't require a dry-fire pull of the trigger, for added safety. It has no external safety switches but manual thumb safety switch placed on frame is available as an option. The polymer grip has same 18 degree cant as in the first generation – it is comfortable and allows for firm grip. The surfaces of the grip are aggressively textured so shooting with wet hands is not a problem. This texturing could be extended to the place where thumb is resting. The backstrap is interchangeable and allows for customization. User can choose from four sizes of backstraps (S, M, M/L and L). The beavertail was slightly modified. One interesting update to the frame is that the internal stainless steel chassis now extends almost to the front of the frame. This feature is meant to give the frame added rigidity for, among other things, helping to improve accuracy. Frame has a short MIL- STD-1913 rail for weapon lights mounting. The slide release lever is ambidextrous and the magazine release button can be transferred from left to the right side. Another upgrade is the completely redesigned trigger mechanism with crisp, wide trigger with lighter trigger pull and audible trigger reset. That's a very same trigger as in the Performance Center® M&P®9 Pro Series®/ Stainless steel slide has back and additional front serrations for easier reloads and press-checks. Slide and 4.25" steel barrel are coated with Armornite® durable corrosion resistant finish... Steel iron sights has hi-viz crisp white dots. Smith & Wesson M&P® M2.0 pistols are now available in three caliber variants: 9 mm Para, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. They come in solid Black or Flat Dark Earth colors. www.fragoutmag.com
