www.fragoutmag.com www.fragoutmag.com On 3rd September 2019, SIG Sauer announced that company was down-selected by US Army in Next Generation Squad Weapons (NGSW) program. US Army is currently looking for potential replacement of squad automatic weapons and infantry rifles including new types of ammunition. SIG Sauer proposal includes NGSW-Rifle assault rifle and belt-fed NGSW-AR lightweight machine gun, both chambered in new 6.8x51 Hybrid ammunition (brass case with steel base) and with new suppressors. The multi-caliber (either 6.8 or 7.62 NATO) SIG SLX-SPEAR is offered as NGSW-R entry. It is based on proven design of SIG MCX rifles. It features re-designed hand guard with full-length top Picatinny rail and M-LOK interface on the sides, 13" interchangeable barrel and foldable stock. What makes the SIG SLX-SPEAR unique is dual charging handle. First, is standard AR-style T-shaped charging handle in the back of the rifle. Second, is foldable side charging handle on the left side of received. NGSW-R requirements never mention dual charging handle, it's SIG SAUER's own idea. Belt-fed SIG MG-6.8 multi-caliber machine gun (6.8 Hybrid or 7.62 NATO) is a proposal for M249 SAW replacement, the NGSW-AR. Only barrel change is required when changing the caliber. MG-6.8 has side-folded stock, full-length top Picatinny rail, M-LOK handguard and two-stage gas regulator (normal and suppressed). The machine gun is just 5.5 kg. Another product displayed, was the .338 Norma Magnum (6.8NM) MG-338 belt-fed machine gun known earlier as SL MAG (see the Frag Out! Magazine #24 for SHOT Show 2019 report). It was designed to meet USMC and USSOCOM requirements for machine gun to fill the gap between .308 and .50 cal machine guns. MG-338 might be easily converted to 7.62 NATO round (barrel, bolt and feed tray must be replaced). The gun might be fed from both right or left. SIG SAUER
