the replacement process for its aging fleet of Su‑22 attack aircraft. Regarding the potential F‑16 acquisition, the specific configuration remains to be determined. For budgetary reasons, Vietnam initially expressed interest in procuring used F‑16 airframes—although this approach may present challenges in identifying aircraft in suitable technical condition with sufficient remaining operational lifespan. This, in turn, could pave the way for the potential purchase of brand‑new Block 70/72 aircraft. The critical next step involves navigating the formal authorization process for the potential sale, requiring both State Department and Congressional approval. Hanoi reportedly harbors concerns that a Congressional hold could potentially derail the prospective deal. A finalized agreement for the sale of the initial batch of F‑16C/D Fighting Falcon Block 70/72 aircraft to Vietnam would undoubtedly provide Lockheed Martin with the opportunity to surpass the significant milestone of 200 units sold for this advanced variant. To date, the program has secured firm contracts for 188 aircraft. Importantly, each sale of new Block 70/72 jets also sustains production activities at Polskie Zakłady Lotnicze sp. z o.o. (PZL Mielec) in Poland, a key subsidiary within the Lockheed Martin corporation. This Polish aerospace facility has long been a critical supplier of fuselage structures— ultimately contributing approximately 80% of the aircraft's airframe—which are then integrated into the final assembly process at the Greenville production line in the United States. www.fragoutmag.com
