behind one of the tires (engine block proffered). Depending on the side the vehicle was attacked from, the colleague on the other seat of the car, has to also exit trough the adverted side, which means he has to crawl over the hand break and the other seat while keep- ing low in order not to expose himself to the enemy. It looks cool in the movies, but in real live it is most probably the last mistake you make, if you take cover behind the car door, as the door under normal circumstances, does not even stop a 9 mm round, much less n round fired from an AK47. Once taken cover behind the wheels, the officer still has to fight back. So Frank Thiel showed several shooting positions suitable for this situation. The Name "Brokeback Mountain" gives you an idea, that some of these positions are uncomfortable to say at least, but in a firefight comport is the least of the priorities, while effectiveness in paramount. Also for shooting above the engine hood Frank Thiel showed several helpful techniques. Given the fact that the hood is curved and that the line of sight is a few centimeters above the bullet path, without special techniques or exposing yourself too much, it is very likely to hit the engine hood instead of the enemy. On the more theoretical side, well-known ballistic expert Michael Waldbrenner held a very informative lecture about the disadvantag- es of short barreled assault rifles. While within the SWAT community assault rifles with barrels of less than 10" barrel length become more and more popular, the lecture addressed the serious drawbacks of this dangerous trend. Those short barreled assault rifles are not only extremely loud, even with ear protection, and therefore, even for trained operators, very unpleasant and distraction to shoot inside buildings, they also result in a significant muzzle flash, compared to standard barrel length. This does not only give away the position of the shooter to the enemy, but also can dazzle the operator him- self when shooting in low light conditions. Due to the shorter barrel and the necessary modifications of the gas system, the gun is more prone to failure and will not work with all kinds of ammunition any- REPORT
