L85A2 protection from working under high stress. Then it sounded twisted, but now is seems to me that twisted is only fact that they think about it almost 70 years ago. Or, maybe instructor just made it up and Mikhail Kalashnikov was shined by different more prosaic, technological goal or he just made it up by accident. Anyway – it worked in Kalashnikov, so why it cannot work in GROT? Yes, it would require re-thinking and re-engineering internals, but it is not „rocket science" and it is possible to „work out" during upgrades to M3 standard. Disadvantage will be the same as leaving everything the same, and that is necessity of getting used to by strongly declared AR users to that type of selector. Advantage – to set weapon on full auto you will truly want it. Speaking frankly, problem seems to be exaggerated. German Bundeswehr is using from years rifles with 45 degree switches. Ever popular MP5 SMG comes with similar selector (even with safe-single-burst-full auto setting, so four in total). New HK433 also can have that selector as an option (customers will have a choice of G36 or HK416 style setup). How about Belgian FN SCAR used by US SOF? How about Tavor and others? Off course, it is worthy during implementation process to take into considerations feedback form users and adjust weapon to their taste, but on the other hand – military is not about democracy. What is more, Polish Armed Forces are introducing totally new firearm that cannot be compared to anything used already, so whole training process will has to be conducted anyway. Soldier can be trained on the GROT as it is now or go for solution number 4. Why that one? That is most optimal in my opinion – I've shoot GROT a little bit here and there and (I know, not under stress) and never had an issue with that fire selector, speaking frankly – I like very much that construction because of how easy it is to operate that selector switch. www.fragoutmag.com
