ORP Albatros at the base in Gdynia The new MCMV is not the first vessel that bears the name Albatros. The former Project 206F Albatros was built by the Komuna Paryska Shipyard in Gdynia and served in the Polish Navy between 1965 and 1994. The first ever Albatros vessel was commissioned in the Polish Navy in April 1946 and it was operated until January 1959. The 253Ł Project vessel was transferred by the USSR, sharing the equipment leftovers after WWII. On the eve of the flag-raising ceremony, the 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla where the ORP Albatros is to serve organized a media meet- ing in Gdynia - that allowed us to get up close and personal with the new solutions implemented onboard, based on the conclusions drawn from the trials and the operational use of the ORP Kormoran II (601) prototype. More importantly, the whole series of the Kormoran MCMVs is to be as homogeneous as possible which would facilitate the operational use in the future. 6 vessels in total are to be deliv- ered, by a consortium consisting of the Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. (based in Gdansk), PGZ War Shipyard Sp. z o.o. (based in Gdyn- ia), and the OBR CTM S.A. company (Research and Development Center - Center for Maritime Technology, based in Gdynia). The first three vessels (named ORP Kormoran, ORP Albatros, and ORP Mewa) would be operated by the Adm. Andrzej Karweta 13th Minesweepers Squadron based in Gdynia. The remaining three vessels, ordered in June 2022, would be received by the 12th Minesweepers Squadron, stationed in Świnoujście. www.fragoutmag.com
